An eye opener

It has felt like decades since I last worked at the Hospital back home in Newfoundland. In reality, its only been since 2005. Funny how it seems like it was worlds away. I was just at a hospital last Wednesday to have my breathing test done. I’ll re-cap that on Wednesday or so, in case anyone is interested in hearing the results.

Oh gosh, remember the days wearing scrub pants from the hospital was popular? I admit, I thought it was awesome too. Until I started working there, and I definitely wanted to purchase my own! Now, I find it pretty gross that people wear the operating room uniform. The guy who did my breathing test last week had some scrubs on. Which totally made me want to yak up my lunch.

I worked at the Hospital for about 4 years, and of course bought my own scrub clothing after seeing what goes in the hamper and dirty laundry after cleaning out the operating rooms (yes! I did that!!) along with some incredibly violent with their food and … other bodily fluids on nurses and doctors uniforms. Not something that I’d like to wear, no matter the cleaning process it goes through. I could see myself getting a little out of hand and perhaps a minor OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) coming on after working there for a number of years. Thankfully it went away, but I was almost to the point that I didn’t want to touch elevator buttons or door handles anymore because I knew what went on.I always saw Nurses Aids and even nurses NOT washing their hands after using the restroom. Ugh.

For a number of years while I worked at the hospital, I held a variety of duties: I worked down in the psychiatric unit for a summer. Which to sum it up was eye opening, interesting , exciting and scary all at the same time. I also was a housekeeper cleaning the patient rooms, operating rooms, emergency rooms, and even bonded with some of the ambulance staff who fed me! HA!! I also ended up doing a Medical Terminology class half way through of my “years” at the hospital and switched over to being a ward clerk, which is essentially a secretary for the nurses and doctors. That consisted of 12 hour shifts of answering phones, making appointments and doing up new patient charts. I worked in the NICU (baby ICU ward — so sad), ICU (critical care), and of course on the floors and down in psychiatry again.

Man I made so much money while I was a student working away at the hospital, living with my parents. I now have a job that I completely love with minimum stress, with a fantastic boss and co-workers who are all super great. I mean, who can really say that? Working at the hospital was definitely an eye opener for me, and definitely mingled with a wide variety of personalities. I’m glad I had that opportunity to work there for so many years. Hard to appreciate it when you’re naive and immature like I was. But I certainly do realize that now.

What was one eye opening moment in your life, whether it be at a place of work, or elsewhere?

$300 grocery bill. 8 loads of laundry. Oh, just a regular weekend!

Despite my blogging marathon this weekend, I did do more than just sit on the computer and write! In fact I finally did my laundry. Can you just take a wild guess at how many loads I ended up doing? Seriously, I told my Dad this and he just laughed at me.

Eight loads of laundry, washed, dried, folded and put away within 3 hours. I love having access to so many washers down in the apartment complex’s basement. I have to explain this to you though, because it wasn’t all clothing.

  • 1 load of “good” towels”
  • 1 load of old towels
  • 1 load of dark laundry
  • 1 load of whites
  • 1 load of bed sheets
  • 1 load of the under the bed/mattress cover thing
  • 1 load of laundry for Alfie’s bed + his bed cover
  • 1 load of athletic laundry that has to be on the delicate cycle

Sweet moses, I can’t be leaving laundry this long, if/when we move into a place where there is only going to be one washer, and one dryer!

We also spend $300 on groceries last night. I know. How is that possible? Even when I went grocery shopping with my parents we never managed to spend that much with a family of four. I have to say, I haven’t been using my coupons all that often and we were out of EVERYTHING. I’m talking no meat, no parchment paper, no sugar, milk, you got it? Bare bones people. That’s what happened when we tried to clean out the fridge and some of the cupboards before going on vacation to British Columbia.

Our freezer won’t fit anything else. Everything falls out when you open the door, so it’s a bit ridiculous at the moment, but much welcomed. So I have desperately created a menu of the week:

  • Monday: Panini’s
  • Tuesday: Macaroni and Cheese
  • Wednesday: Burgers
  • Thursday: Breaded halibut, carrots and potatoes
  • Friday: Chicken quesadillas

Not the healthiest meal plan, but it gets a belly full and the job done, especially when you have a rushed week and have to work on a Saturday. Boo!!

Soon I’ll have to send out little doggie 1st birthday invitations for Alfie’s friends. HAHA. He’s almost a year old, can you believe how fast that time flew for me? Zippaahh!!

I think soon my readers are going to tell me to stop wearing cardigans all week long, just like I should go out and buy more skirts during the summer so I’d stop wearing those long bermuda shorts. Help me get dressed!

You also can’t really tell that the “skinny pants” i’m wearing on Wednesday and Friday are actually two diferent pairs. One’s charcoal (Wednesday) the other is black (today).

As I mentioned on Wednesday, the weeks are just flying by and I’m loving it. I went out and purchased a few things at the store called Smart Set, and ended up with 3 pairs of pants (two of them being “skinny pants”) and one camisole. I may return three items though, since I shouldn’t be shopping right after I got back from vacation.

Wednesday was a super fun day since I went out with a co-worker to one of the two local Universities here in the city where I work/live/play. It was fun to mingle with the athletics department who was hosting the open house. We know them for a few things since we do sponsorships for that one uni. I also checked out the local universities bouldering wall inside one of the buildings. I was lusting after it, and wanted to go home to grab my climbing shoes and get out with them and BOULDER. Alas, I am not staff, alumni, nor a student – I am just a community member. Maybe if I get a hold of one of the athletics department main head-honcho that we deal with, he can swing a dealiooo… I miss climbing.

Thursday’s pants are annoyingly too big. I hate how they look on my thighs. HUGE. I need to get these to a tailor, A-SAP.

Anyway! Happy Friday! Too bad today isn’t payday, it’d be a better Friday in my books. What are everyone’s plans for this weekend? I desperately need to do laundry. Can you believe I’m running out of undies? Who lets that happen? I have so many pairs of those things, that I have never ran out … ever! Time for this lazy butt (ha, pardon the BUM I mean PUN) to get off her arse (HAHAHAHA) and do some laundry. Now, off to go clip some coupons to use for getting deals this weekend — AND get a hair cut! I LOVE getting pampered. Catcha later!
