Exploring Coffee Shops: La PanotiQ

La-PanotiQ-dessertsCampbell is a small town of 40,000 people locally situated not too far from our house, and is a great spot to go out for a bite to eat, or walk along the main strip. I’ve adopted La PanotiQ as my go-to coffee shop for the last few months. The Campbell location is beautiful, and has this French vibe to it. Huge lounge benches for catching up with friends, impeccably clean bathrooms, and delicious vanilla lattes. I mean, check out the presentation of their goodies. Just as delicious as they looked and the perfect size for pairing with a cup of coffee.

La PanotiQ Bakery and Cafe has 6 locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their website describes it as French culinary tradition meets modern chic European style. I totally get the feeling that I’m walking into a European cafe when I step inside. You can order anything from pastries and sweet mini desserts, to savoury lunchtime dishes or lighter options such as a fruit bowl, or parfaits.

La-PanotiQ-lunchI’d skip on getting a full meal there, the sandwiches aren’t the best and don’t have any sort of sauce on them. Especially the ham and cheese. It’s straight up ham and brie cheese on a baguette, so it’s quite dry. The desserts are not to be forgotten, so yummy and quite a nice treat along side of your hot drink.

Campbell-La-PanotiQI love that they sprinkle on a cocoa stencil on your dessert plate, it’s a nice added touch.

La-PanotiQ-selfieThis is the front of the store in Campbell, where you obviously place your order. The second pic is a bathroom selfie. Haha! I couldn’t help it. Their bathrooms are huge, and really clean. Had to be somewhat documented.

La-PanotiQ-seatingThere’s always fresh flowers on the table. I love this huge vase right in the centre of the long dining table. The first few times I came in here, all I did was bring a note book and pen, then sat down and people watched and tried to come up with some blog post ideas.

La-PanotiQ-foodYummy desserts, and some lunch options. I’d suggest the mini chocolate ganche’s or the chocolate macarons, they’re both amazing.

Okay, on to a completely different feel at the San Francisco location, unfortunately…

I’m not entirely sure if La PanotiQ is a chain coffee shop or if the Campbell and San Francisco locations are owned by the same people. But I definitely do not recommend the SF location. When I ventured off to San Francisco with my friend, visiting from Canada, it was a completely different experience (and not in a good way) all in itself. I’m going to keep it short and not-so-sweet. la-PanotiQ-SFSince I mentioned to my friend that I loved La PanotiQ’s Campbell location, I thought this one would bring us the same service. Here’s what went down.

First walking into the cafe, I was looking for directions to the Jane & Fillmore (a very popular intersection in San Francisco) and the two people working there both didn’t know, and replied to me saying “Sorry, I don’t shop here.” I assume they thought it was a store which didn’t quite make sense to me, since I only asked for a street location, not a store to shop at. They’re not to blame, perhaps they were new to working there, or the city itself. I let that one slide, considering they’re not meant to bark out directions to any part of the city one asks for. My GPS was giving me some issues.

My friend asked the barista: Do you do cafe au laits here?

Barista replied quietly: Uhh, I think so.

Perfect. She goes ahead and orders a decaf cafe au lait (for those that aren’t aware, it’s decafe coffee and hot milk. Whereas a latte is espresso and milk), along with some bread pudding.

SF-LaPanotiQThe bread pudding looked great because it came with what was highlighted in the top left photo. Since it was a hot day in The City, I ordered an iced vanilla latte and a chocolate macaron. We sat down at a table waiting for my friends order. When it came to the table, her drink ended up being a hot caffeinated latte. Not a decaf cafe au lait. Hmm. I’m not even sure they knew what a cafe au lait was, there were two people making her hot drink.

The bread pudding was plopped onto a plate, without any additions. My friend corrected the barista and asked for what was on the menu sticker in the front of the store. She pointed that it came with whipped cream, a fruit puree and fresh berries. What happens next, totally grossed us both out. He certainly added berries and whipped cream. But without washing his hands straight out of an unopened blueberry container and didn’t wash the berries! He added the berries and whip cream to the plate and didn’t heat up the bread pudding and forgot the mango puree. At this point we figured it wasn’t worth an argument and just left it at that.

I honestly felt that the San Francisco location had such a crowded kitchen and no one truly knew what they were doing. So let’s just say don’t visit the San Francisco location, it’s quite different from the vibe at Campbell, where everyone is chatty, friendly, washes their hands and adds the cutest additions to your plate.

SPIbelt the unobtrusive fannypack

SPIbelt-headerUnlike many female running pants, my husband often doesn’t have a pocket for his keys when he’s out for his long runs without me, so the SPIbelt has been passed over to him. Although the SPIbelt was sent to us for review, I am not being paid, sponsored or compensated, and the views are always my own I’m not trying to sell you anything, nor do I want you to take my opinions as the final word on any product I post about on the blog. And I know what you’re thinking, here comes the commercial for the product.

NOPE.

You’re wrong. Because, I don’t care if you buy this product. I’m sorry SPIbelt, but it’s true. I just want to voice my own opinion on my own blog, and show you about products I would buy with MY own money. Okay, I agree that was awkward. So now that that’s out in the open, we can get to the real review.

SPIbeltThe title may raise some questions, who wants to wear a fannypack nowadays? But bare with me. The reason I say it’s an unobtrusive fannypack is because it’s not like your 1980’s bulky fannypack. It’s a sleek storage belt that does not bounce, and can be concealed underneath your running tee which can expand to fit something as large as your iPhone 6 plus. Not that I’d know if that would fit, because my husband and I are still loyal BlackBerry users over here: #TeamBlackBerry! The belt is not always expanded so when you don’t carry your phone it looks a lot smaller.

Guys-running-outfitAs I type this out, my husband is out for a 30km run wearing it now, which is impressive considering he can be picky with the gear he uses and rightfully so, given the fact he’s a multi-sport athlete. My husband was even debating whether or not he should wear the SPIbelt on his 6th Ironman triathlon next month, and ultimately decided against it… that is, until I showed him it could be swapped out to be a race number belt with applying toggles to the belt itself.

Garmin-watchEven though I don’t prefer wearing the SPIbelt running, I have been wearing it out on hikes with Alfie, which fits his treats, some doggy bags, and my keys and we’re good to go for a nice hike. It’s also a decent size that it can carry my epipen comfortably.

When my husband and I went to an amusement park a few weeks ago, I used it to store our keys and his BlackBerry while we rode on rollercoasters all day long. I’m enjoying that the SPIbelt although still a fannypack in my mind, it has such a low profile appearance I don’t mind wearing it, especially if you wear it under a top rear facing.

Running-outfit

Pro’s of the SPIbelt:

  • Doesn’t ride up
  • Adjustable waist band
  • Doesn’t bounce around
  • Can be concealed underneath your top
  • Not only for running: carry to amusement parks or keep your passports safe while travelling
  • Can be converted into a race belt for race day
  • Carry dog treats, potty bags, and car keys while hiking

SPIbelt-with-BlackBerryIf you’re interested in a SPIbelt (which stands for Small Personal Item Belt) they come in a variety of colours and styles. The original one I have retails for $19.99.

Glossybox US – August 2015

Looking to buy the August 2015 edition of the Glossybox? Wondering if you should… Pass or Buy?

August-GlossyboxThis month might be a pass for me. One of the reasons is that it’s one of the more expensive beauty subscription boxes out there ($21!), and I’m definitely unimpressed with one of the products that seemed to be full-sized, but along with that — mostly empty! Gah. Let’s get into the details.

lollipops-makeupLollipops Makeup Lip Balm: This is the full-sized product which ended up being 90% empty. Look at me squeeze that tube! At least it smelled good but whatever was left in the scratchy applicator tube, was applied to my lips.  Wasn’t a fan of this product overall. I wonder if mine was an exception, or if all lip balms from this brand are this way.

Sparitual-polishSparitual Nail Lacquer: The nail polish is a well-known brand, especially in salons. I had a facial done in Canada, and noticed that the woman had a whole pile of these polishes lined up. The bottle I received is in a sparkly colour (I tend to opt for creamy polishes with no sparkle), however, it’s pretty and would be cute on the toes. I recently had white shellac done on my nails, and a recent pedicure, so I’ll be trying out this at a later date.

GlamGlowGlamGlow Mud to Foam: Pretty stoked about this product. Although a cleanser, and not one of their popular masks, still pretty excited to give this a try on my face before I apply a self-tanner.

Manna-lash-primer

Eyelash-primerManna Kadar Cosmetics Lash Primer: I don’t like to add too many steps to my beauty routine, I feel like I’m more laid back when it comes to that sort of stuff. I falsely thought the eyelash conditioner would add volume to my eyelashes are long. Which, from the photo you can tell it didn’t (I applied it to my right, your left, eye using the same mascara on top). This is supposed to allow you to ‘retire your false eyelashes’ and act as a base for your mascara. It claims to nourish your lashes and prevent flaking. I don’t like to use flaky mascara as it is, so I can’t attest to it not-flaking, because my mascara doesn’t.

Kajal-PenPop Beauty Kajal Pen in Sooty Black: I love a soft liner that doesn’t tug on the eyes, and this one glides over the skin easily. Although, not the blackest of black eyeliners out there, more like a charcoal sooty colour like the brand describes its product. Great for smudging too with the sponge tip on the other end.

Glossybox US sent me the August box. Opinions are my own.
