Hope I don’t kill it

Being an artistic creative person, working in the arts and graphic design my whole life — you’d think I’d be alright in keeping plants alive and nurtured too, right? Well. I’m not. I’ve killed every plant I have ever owned. So I decided to stop letting things die in my hands and give myself a few years break, and start looking after a dog instead.

Pom, Pomeranian, #Pom, #Pomeranian, #DogsOfInstagram, Alfie the PomThis smiling squirt’s name is Alfie, in case you didn’t know. He’s almost 5, and definitely not dead. Jeeze you guys this is getting morbid. So now that The Guy and I have kept Alfie fed and hydrated — I thought I’d take another shot at a plant. Like I can compare the two. See? Ridiculous.

Jessica invited me along to go to a smoothie place that just opened in Los Altos, I’ll talk about that at another time. Delicious by the way. After our drinks were in our tummies, we walked around down town a bit more and popped into The Botanist, where I purchased an air plant called a Tillandsia Andreana. Tillandsia-Andreana

I’ll never remember that, it was written on my receipt — I don’t even know how to pronounce it. Thankfully, it requires very little watering in fact — just a light misting every 7-10 days, and it doesn’t sit in soil. See? It’s a funny little thing.Tillandsia-Andreana-air-plantIf you keep it in the bathroom and shower a few times a week, that will also keep it alive. I’ve had it a few weeks already so things are looking up. To be honest, I’m thinking about getting another one, only because I bought two vases and one plant. I was getting way ahead of myself. I couldn’t make the decision, so I bought both. It was on impulse, but I do not regret the decision.Tillandsia Andreana, #LosAltos, #DTLA, The Botanist, TheBotanistDTLA

Ultimately I went with the black pot on my white desk with the plant because the clear bowl floating inside another clear bowl (very cool looking) on the island made it looked too dwarfed and I need something taller and bigger there, as Andrea from Mommy Gearest pointed out. I agreed.

Do you have a green thumb?

What are some of your favourite plants?
I’m kinda loving succulents right now. Wonder how difficult those are to keep goin’.

  1. I have a peace lily (Spathiphyllum) that I have had for several years now. It is so resilient! Even if you forget to water it, you notice it looks sad and droopy, give it a big gulp, and it perks right up! I also have an orchid. It takes an ice cube each week. A year or so ago the blooms all fell off, and I was disappointed, but I kept it and in the past month or so it has bloomed again!
