My California Casual Spring Style #FossilStyle

Outfit of the days are one of my favourite things to post on my blog, yet they’re far and few between lately.

I’m forever browsing the Forever 21 store at my local mall, and recently picked up a denim top. I already have one that I bought a few years ago at Target but only had worn it a handful of times. Now, comparing the two together — the one from Forever 21, has a more laidback look to it. Like you’re not trying so hard. Brown stitching, a softer material, and not as heavy to wear in this California weather.

So, thought I’d pull together this afford outfit and show you what I’m wearing, head-to-toe.

Outfit deets:
RayBans | Forever 21 top | Fossil Maya Hobo
Target denim | Faux suede slip-ons | Moto 360 watch (similar)
Etsy gold rings | Gold bracelet from my parents 10+ years ago

While I’m not used to carrying a larger bag on me anymore (I always seem to panic and lose items in the dark abyss of my purse), I’ve been wearing this one when I want to head out with my pals and I need to cart around a lot of stuff. For instance, blog photos…and I require an outfit change. It’ll all fit in this bag, ha!

Thanks for Fossil for sending over this sweet purse. It’s the Maya Hobo in the Marine shade, and available online. Yay!

Posin’ with my lunch. One of the biggest, and also one of the most expensive salads I’ve ever eaten. But it was good. And it had kale in it! You bet I ate every bite of it (because it was $$$ lol).

My wardrobe isn’t the most expensive one out there, but I thought you guys would be interested in some of my latest purchases (and PR samples: the Fossil purse). By the way, totally don’t own that keepcup in the photo above. I finally saw one at a store in Santa Cruz, and snapped a pic with it. Is that weird?

I love my pink slip-on’s so much I bought two pairs of them, heehee!

Shop my outfit! (Sorry not everything is exact, similar items linked below)

Disclaimer: If ya didn’t catch it already from all my mentions above, Fossil sent me the Maya Hobo for review.

Poke lunch and a drive down Highway 9

Another day, another adventure.

One of the days I had the Mazda 6 for the week, I ended up taking a mini-road trip with my sidekick while my husband was away with my car, in Santa Barabara on a cycling trip with his buds (my car fits his bike way better since it’s a hatch). So it was just the two of us goin’ for a day drive road trip.

And Alfie thought he was the boss, as per usual. I posted this exact photo on IG last week captioning it appropriately so: I feel like Alfie is giving me that stern look from a parent, or a chauffeur, looking back at the kids telling them to behave in the back seat “or we’ll turn right around and go back home!” 😂.

First stop was to Santana Row to try out the new Poke place on the row. I’m going to admit right now that I’m not the most adventurous eater, as many already know I much prefer a meat-and-potatoes dish. I’m easy to please with simple cuisines. However, Santana Row reached out to me and since I go there tons anyway, I thought hey — why not brand out of my comfort zone and pop in.

Honestly, my full-intentions when visiting, was to select the vegetarian options. But the two managers serving me on that particular day suggested I try some of the items that were cooked (guys, I can’t do raw fish, sorry). I ended up choosing a brown rice bowl with octopus (!!!!), shrimp, crab and tofu (that was the first thing I added to my meal because I was so afraid haha! I got it all mixed together with two types of sauce/dressing: ponzu and spicy mix (which wasn’t that spicy at all, which is nice).

A view from the front door of Poke Bar, Santana Row

To my surprise I think the octopus was the best part. Until… I thought about what I was eating. I got through over half my meal and then I couldn’t stop thinking about the suction-cup arms and couldn’t do it anymore. I got weirded out! Not sure if a poke dish is for me, but I was pretty stoked I tried it. Coming from a gal who wouldn’t eat bell peppers in her 20’s! Ha! Are you guys into poke? Have you tried it before? The line-up when I was there was literally out the door, so I know it’s a pretty popular spot.

After my lunch I swung by the house to pick up Alfie and go on our excursion to check out some new-to-me places in the Mazda 6 that I had for all of last week.

I probably say this in every car write-up that I’ve talked about here on the blog. My Mazda is 10 years old as of this year, it’s definitely not in its prime but I’m not getting rid of it any time soon, either. While I enjoy driving tons of other vehicles, Mazda still has that familiarity with me when I sit inside a new one. This 2017 was no different. White interiors are totally my jam. They’re beautiful, but I can imagine they’d be difficult to keep clean especially if I cart my little Alfie, the Captain in Command around all the time. Looks pretty sleek in the machine gray metallic exterior with a parchment nappa leather interior.

We ended up checking out this vista-point lookout at the mountain range, how beautiful is it now that all the rain has made everything green again? Lol poor little Alfie waiting patiently and attentively at me, waiting for a command to come racing back to my side. Some boy.

If you are diggin’ my outfit (which will actually be featured on the blog here in a few days — the post is already scheduled out), don’t forget to scope out Coupon Sherpa (they have online, printable and grocery coupons; you can also download their app) before hunting it down in stores and shopping online, my jean-top is from Forever 21. For the most part I do a lot of my shopping online since I pay with PayPal and always use a coupon code with it to get that added discount. I also scoped out a sweet pair of suede slip-on sneakers from Steve Madden when I went to Marshall’s last night with my husband. But they didn’t have my size— online I go, get the discount from coupon sherpa, because I ain’t payin’ full price! :)

I was spoiled last week — thanks to both Santana Row for lunch, and Mazda for a review car for the week, and thanks to Coupon Sherpa for sponsoring this post!

Colouring my hair at home

It sounds cliche, but you totally get what you pay for. I’ve fallen off track the past few years on my hair care, trying everything under the sun and ignoring the fact that my poor hair needs extra love and care, because it’s kinda high maintenance. It breaks easily, I have fine/thin hair and I can’t wear it in a pony often (because, breakage).

Thinking back to the times when my hair was at its best, was when I was an avid user of Aveda products. I know what you’re thinking, “this is a sponsored post, don’t believe her!“But it’s not. Although I was provided these for review, I reached out to them specifically for this particular line.

Who remembers the days of my orange/yellow vibrant hair? I had it coloured that way for a climbing competition over a decade ago, and it’s actually what caught my now-husband’s eye at a party. Ha!! Back then my hair was at its longest, and healthiest.

During the past few years I didn’t think too much of what product I was putting into my hair, and I was reaching for mainly the cheapest alternatives, and it was.not.helping. My hair literally did not grow past my shoulders for 8+ years. The hair stylists told me to not wash it often (I now was 2-3x/week) and not to brush it constantly, or wear your hair in a pony, etc . etc. etc. I swear nothing worked you guys. I gotta say I think it all boils down to lower quality products I used in the past.

In January 2016 I bought my husband and I silk pillow cases, and started to get serious about my hair-care again. I wanted it stop freakin’ breaking at the base (where my head rests on a pillow — I sleep on my back), and so far so good pals. My hair is slowly growin’ back there. Fast forward 12 years, and I’m now introducing Aveda shampoo/conditioner back into my life. That’s not to say I haven’t fallen completely off the Aveda-wagon (I’ve been using a few of their styling products the entire time).

I now dye my hair at home — the healthy way, with professional dyes not box-dye. I received specific instructions by my hair stylist that I trusted and loved for all the years I was in Ontario for, and haven’t looked back since. It sounds like a complicated mixture, but if you’re interested in the particular colour my hair is right now, I’ll tell you. I prefer my hair to be cool-toned, with zero trace of red although because I am in a warmer climate my hair fades to red regardless. It’s quite the conundrum!

So, first off I’ll mention I dye my hair myself once every 6-8 months. I have the 20 volume base, mix in a 2:1 ratio of volume + hair colour. But for the hair colour I mix two shades together. Most of the Wella 4N/411 (n=neutral) and a capful of 6A Dark Ash Blonde (I love neutral-ashy-hair) and apply to the roots for 30-35 minutes, pull through the colour to the ends at the last 3-4 minutes. Sometimes I don’t apply colour to the ends at all , but when I do I apply the colour to the ends, and immediately jump in the shower to wash it all off.

My hair soaks up colour easily, so I don’t want my ends to get too dark. However this time because I liked the lighter bits on the end of my hair, I kinda did a full-balayage on myself without using a painting technique. Literally just grabbed sections of my hair (after I did my roots) and wiggled the colour throughout certain strands, making it look naturally highlighted. I hope that’s not confusing.

This is the end result!

Then follow through with Aveda’s Colour Conserve shampoo + conditioner combo for a while!

On days that I wash my hair I follow up with a dry shampoo, right after blow-drying. Mainly to give it a bit of grip and volume. I have a couple of favourites, but for the most part I reach for the Aveda dry shampoo (it’s white but I apply it to my hands first then rub them together and va-va-voom it, or sprinkle a bit on my roots directly – don’t SMOOSH the bottle or a bunch will come out and … it will look like you have a ton of weird grey powder in your brown hair). If I’m lazy I’ll reach for an aresol spray like the Klorane one. That is, if I didn’t apply it after blow-drying. I tend to apply dry-shampoo in my hair right before bed, so I don’t wake up with any grease at the root! A little trick I taught myself.

Maybe in a future post I’ll talk about how I cut my hair at home? For the past few years my husband has been doing it, but lately I’ve been grabbin’ a hold of the scissors myself and doing it.

*Disclaimer: I asked the PR folks if I could review the Klorane dry shampoo, and Aveda Colour Conserve products. Not makin’ any dollahs off this. Just tellin’ you some facts.
