Work uniforms, yay or nay?

It’s that time of year again when the teachers go back to work from their luxurious whole summer of, and the rest of us go back to work from a mini-vacation.

Back in 2004-ish when I worked at the Hospital, I was just a “call in”, so I could basically take vacations whenever I wanted. I kind of miss that. Tons of people are probably purchasing new uniform or two to wear and update their look come autumn/winter. Especially when everyone is going back to school and getting new school clothes. Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Ward Clerks and Housekeepers basically wear all of the same type of uniform as it is, and it’s pretty difficult to get something different than your co-worker.

If you’re female and reading my website right now, and are interested in getting scrub uniforms why not just check out this website: http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/categories/Scrubs/Scrubs-for-Women/. I’ve had a look around on their site before since I’ve wrote blog entries about them in the past. They have up-to-date looks on their uniforms, and some really great patterns, and shapes for the uniforms themselves.

I have to say, wearing a uniform to work has its perks and obvious disadvantages. Perks being that you wake up in the morning and not having to think about what you want to wear in the morning, and not caring about what gets spilled on you, because you can clean it once you get home and it’s not like you’re going to wear your uniform out to dinner or anything, that’s just nasty. But the disadvantages are that many of them are ill fitting and you can’t see what people’s dressing-personality or style is like. Do you kind of know what I mean? Sure there are jeans day and you can pay five bucks which goes to Charity and everything, but that was a rarity around my area, especially in housekeeping where you really don’t want to wear your own clothes.

Would you rather your work place have a uniform set for you to wear? Or do you like wearing your own clothes?

I think most places do have some sort of attire they’d ideally like you to wear. The spot where I work is more business casual. I rarely meet with people face-to-face and while I do like dressing up, it’s not necessary. I can wear almost anything I want besides blue jeans (dark blue jeans are okay, as are black! Yay!)

BC Recap 1

I didn’t take any photos at all during the Ironman Canada triathlon because one I want to cheer on my boyfriend as loud and as excitedly as possible, and two the professionals take way better photos than I do anyway. No sense! So I don’t have those to show you. But what I will show are some one’s after the race.

We ended up checking out the infamous climbing area, better known as Skaha Bluffs. Such great rock. I didn’t bring my gear with me, but just imagine myself climbing on these rocks. Or bouldering, with hiking sneakers. You know, awkwardly. See below!I was much more inclined to check out this area which is basically in Penticton itself. Moreso than the previous two years we went to IMC, because in mid-August a climbing gym opened up in my area and I can now CLIMB AGAIN! Do you know how much happier I’m going to be, now that I can climb again!??

We stopped by a fruit market along the highway. Look at those mountains — how fake they look. Right? Incredible. Right out of a western movie, baha!I’m the hugest fan of British Columbia peaches after I had one the very first year and it was so juicy. These weren’t too bad either. We also had one day to hike a mini-mountain. This is the “summit” which wasn’t all that high, but it was high enough for me, and a long enough walk for me. I was pooped.

Entertaining myself while the Boyf sets up his fancy camera and takes better photos than I do. ;) Good thing I’m not into the internet mumbo jumbo free online dating, he was taking a while! I was playing on my BlackBerry for a bit. Tweet Tweet.

Anyway that’s all I’ve got for now! It takes an awfully long time to load photos onto an iPad. I’ll be back tomorrow with more!

[IMC] Ironman Canada recap

We went to British Columbia for the Ironman Canada race that my Boyfriend has competed in each year for the past three years. IMC  is (and is always) held in sunny, beautiful, hot ass weather Penticton. Race day was really warm and it was also the first time that I went out to volunteer. I usually like to stick around and scope out the best places to cheer on my Boyfriend, but since his sister was also with us — we decided to volunteer. We got to keep those fabulous orange shirts as well. Flattering. :)

We were at the water station for IMC and rather than myself handing out water, I decided to ask the competitors if they wanted to get splashed… and I threw cups of water on their chests / over their heads / on their back, all while wearing the Newfoundland flag as a wrap-around skirt on my bottom half. It was fun interacting with all the runners and obviously I went ballistic ringing my cowbell and running along side my Boyfriend when we saw him on the run course. He took another half hour off his time from last year, he did the same thing in 2010, so since 2009 he’s an HOUR faster. :) !!

Volunteering at the aid station for 4 hours definitely made the entire day fly by. I’ll be definitely thinking about re-signing up to volunteer again next year.

I’ll be back later with a recap of the rest of my vacation with the Boyfriend. Here’s what’s coming up: We rode a tandem bike around Vancouver, I did a hike that I didn’t like (see below / crank face) and saw some old friends from Newfoundland! I really need to get my computer fixed to show you more photos. Maybe I should just take utility knives to it and have at’er. Til next time!
