California Bronze . Beauty Talk Tuesday

California-Bronze-headerSpring has hit, and you’re telling yourself you need a little bit of sun to warm up your face after a long winter. Except you’re super pale, the weather is still cold and you have no idea what to do with your skin. Girrrrrrrrrl, fake it til you make it!

If there is one thing you need to buy this spring/summer for your makeup collection, it’s California Bronze by bareMinerals. it’s a brand new product that recently launched, and I’m here to tell you it’s the best matte bronzer I’ve used — even after only trying it out for an entire week (psst: it’s only because you need the tinest amount. Best bang for your buck here!).

bareMinerals-California-BroTwo universally flattering matte bronzers (The Ocean View & The High Dive) and one golden highlight called The Shining Moment.

CA-Bronze-BMI was flipping through my latest Ulta catalogue and noticed that bareMinerals came out with a bronzer duo + a highlight for summer, appropriately titled California Bronze. I e-mailed my contact from bareMinerals asking if I could review it. Because if anyone knows bronzer, it’s me. All I need in life is a foundation, concealer and bronzer, then I’m set for life. The other makeup items is simply a bonus. And just because I received the product for free to review doesn’t mean you shouldn’t trust my opinion. You should trust my opinion because I’m always 100% honest and tell you how it is. Seriously, go back and review my other beauty reviews. They’re not all honky dory! Not only that, I wanted to try this product out, so I made it happen by reaching out to the company instead of vice versa.

Just because I live in California doesn’t mean I am a sun worshipper! I am indoors most of the days, trying to retain this youthful look I’ve got goin’ on here in my thirties. Ya can’t take wrinkles and and leathery skin back. Can ya. Sunless tanner + bronzer = my bff. I’ll get into the sunless tanner routine a little later in April, but for now. I’m going to create a makeup look using it so you can see how it works on my pale skin.

CaBronzeLook11. Bobbi Brown Extra Eye Repair Cream: Apply an eye cream before your makeup.
2. Philosophy Full Of Promise: This is a firming neck cream, but I asked my philosophy friends if I could use this on my face, since it was feeling extra dry lately. Sure enough, you can! Apply a nice helping of moisturizer to the face before applying makeup. This will make sure your foundation doesn’t stick to any dry patches.
3. Dior Star foundation: One of my favourite go-to foundations lately. I use a damp beauty blender sponge to achieve a dewy look.
4. Laura Mercier concealer: I’m trying to use up many of my makeup items before purchasing new ones. Here is a Laura Mercier concealer I used under the eyes to brighten them up.

Before we get started on the next few steps, I thought the animated image would help you understand where I will place my bronzer in a “3” shaped motion on either side of the face.bareMinerals California Bronze

CaBronzeLook21. bareMinerals California Bronze trio: The bronzers are on either side of the trio, the middle is a powder highlight. Something I prefer to skip over because I usually like to use cream highliters to achieve a more dewy look to the cheek bones. I’ve used it a couple of times, but I definitely won’t use it up as quickly as I would the two broznzers. If you’re a little pale, use the one on the left titled The Ocean View, and if you’re already a bit darker use The High Dive (in which case I used the latter for the tutorial because colours always seem to wash out when I photograph this kinda stuff for you). Use a fairly light hand, these two bronzers are so pigmented you’ll only need a touch — which is excellent, as the product will last you that much longer. I’ve also used two of the bronzers together to create a multi-dimensional looking tan, just layering ever so carefully. I love it.
2. Jordana Lengtheinig Mascara: I picked this mascara up at Walgreens a few weeks ago, asking the lady at the counter which of the 3 Jordana mascaras was the most popular. Apparently it was this lengthening one. I bought the volumizing one before but it clumped so bad I had to throw it out after a month or so. This one isn’t too bad! I’d repurchase.
3 & 4 bareMinerals moxie lipstick in Express Yourself & Buxom lipgloss in White Russian: My go-to peachy pink lip colour lately. I’m already half way through the lip gloss. Good thing I know where to buy the full sized!

The finished look:

Do you use bronzer on a daily basis?
On the days I wear makeup, absolutely. Otherwise I feel like my skin looks to “flat”.

What is your favourite item in your makeup bag?
Concealer + bronzer.

Which season is your favourite?
I always say Fall, but living here in California I’m pretty cool with the warm sunshine happenin’ daily.

bareMinerals California Bronze is now available in stores, and retails for $29 USD / $35 CDN.

Disclosure: I received the bareMinerals products to review (but those were ages ago) and I already mentioned I asked for the bronzer to review! No one ever tells me what to write, so all opinions are always my own.

Cinequest Film Festival at California Theatres

California-Theatres-SJThe Guy and I have been going to independent films since we lived in Waterloo, Ontario (Canada). We used to get our fix of an array of movies just a block away from our old apartment. Clearly since moving here it’s impossible to know each and every thing a city has to offer — so I was pleasantly surprised our weekend staycation in downtown San Jose overlapped Cinequest which was also going on that week.

Little did I know how huge the fest was! Cinquest Film Festival recently finished it’s 25th consecutive year and my husband and I had the chance to check out a couple of films at the historic California Theatre in downtown San Jose. It reminds me a bit of the Banff Mountain Film Festival that we attend every year, and went to on March 14 in Los Altos. Except the Banff one is all about films that have to do with outdoor excursions, mainly in the mountains. Cinequest is an annual week long independent film festival held in San Jose, with multiple films to choose from each night. Where as Banff goes on a world tour for the entire year yet only visits ‘your’ city for 2 nights.

California-Theatres-insideAmerica’s history is so old, and I’m a huge geek for beautiful craftsmanship and architecture (I get it from my Father the ol’ retired architect, I spose!). Although Cinequest was hosting films at a couple of theatres, we managed to catch two flicks at California theatres both times. I didn’t get to photograph the beautiful theatre with the lights on, but I did snap a few photos while walking around.

California-Theatres-in So gorgeous right? I felt so fancy just to even be inside the building.

Cinequest also has film awards on the closing night of the festival, we didn’t attend that since we had a fairly busy schedule that weekend — but it would have been great to see what was awarded as top film, best feature, and other popular films so we’d know what to watch when we want something other than a hollywood film.

Cinequest-Champs-FilmThe entire building was quite classy and grand inside. Here was one gentleman introducing the film we were about to watch: Champs.

We watched two films over the course of the weekend, first being Traces of Sandalwood which was a movie filmed in both Spain and India, and the base of the story was two sisters were separated at a young age. The older one ended up being a famous bollywood actress and dancer, who was constantly searching for her younger sister. When she did find her, it was hard to watch. I never cry at films, and towards the end I had a huge lump in my throat — sitting between two guys (one being my husband) trying to contain myself. Oh, it was heart wrenching for a little bit! So much emotion. Definitely a great movie.

The final film we ended up seeing was the one you see in the photo above, called Champs. It was mainly a documentary about pursuing the American Dream through boxing, how it challenges the boxers and what success inevitably does to them. I gotta say, I’m not sure if Mike Tyson is an incredibly smart man, or if he is completely foolish and out of his mind. The film had some funny parts and boy, Mike can be a funny dude.

Cinequest-Top-Hat-ManAfter we left I snapped this picture upon leaving the theatre. Check out the man in the top hat and white suit, waving to everyone! Ha, super awesome.

To give you a brief run-down on the theatre, here is what I grabbed from my buddies at Team San Jose:

The California Theatre in San Jose, California is managed and operated by San Jose Theaters, a division of Team San Jose. It regularly hosts performances of Opera San Jose, Symphony Silicon Valley and more. This beautiful theatre, originally built in 1927 and renovated and upgraded from 2001-2004, marries the opulence of its movie palace origins with state-of-the-art attributes.

California-TheatreNow that we know Cinequest Film Festival is an annual event in downtown San Jose, we’ll be keeping a watchful eye for next year, and hopefully one of the films we want to watch is at the other theatre, so we can take a peek inside that one too.

POM Friday . 20

Alfie-in-front-of-Ros-Egp-MAs much as I try to bring Alfie new places all the time, I don’t think he will ever grow out of the nervous-pooping. He is fantastic in the car and chills out, sometimes looks out the window — occasionally barks at the cars next to us. If we’re going to his favourite dog food place to get him a new bone, he’s cool. If we’re going on adventure the first thing he needs to do is mark his spot about 17 times, then comes the nervousness. I clean that up because I am prepared unlike the last time. And he does circles around me, freaking out and he just wants to be up in my arms. Well ya ain’t gettin’ your way 100% of the time Mr. Schnogg. I want some pretty blog photos with you in them, Alfie!

Alfie-barking(He’s already barking and we had only just arrived. Pipe down young Alfie, sheesh!)

Alfie-smiling-on-trailSo we headed out to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum mid-morning yesterday and spent some time on the outside grounds since they’ve been known for pretty scenery. There was a hoard of young teens arriving at the same time as we did, they were with their school. I tried not to get any photos with them in there, to make for better pictures — ha let’s be real.

Alfie-near-flowersBut get this. One of the teeny-boppers ran over to Alfie squealing You have such a cute cat! Oh dear, I think that kid needs to stay in school a little longer.

Onto the pictures.

Alfie-sitting-and-waitingAlfie is an excellent dog behavioural wise when no one is around (isn’t that always the way). He will sit-stay for as long as I tell him to. Little guy looks so tiny in the Peace Garden!

Alfie-happy-runThis is after I said the release command and he’s full force happy-running to me. Nothing makes me smile bigger than seeing this little fella run into my arms.

Alfie-sittingThe grounds were really beautiful, and so much larger than I expected — so we stayed for a good 45 minutes.
