Explore California: San Pedro Square, San Jose

San-Pedro-Sq-HeaderCan you believe we visited the first week of March and it was practically like a gorgeous summers day? I mean, I guess I should get used to it given that we’re in California. But it still boggles my mind how warm it can get during the winter. I love it. Layer on the sunblock though!

San-Pedro-SquareI want more people to experience my amazing wonderful new home city of San Jose, which is why I’ve been writing continuously about our weekend staycation.

The Guy and I headed down here for a bite to eat during our San Jose staycation that I’ve been writing about for the past few weeks. He had never been inside the San Pedro Square Market building, so we took a walk inside. For those that live in the Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario Canada part — you’ll know what i mean when I say this reminded me a bit of the St. Jacob’s Market.

San-Pedro-Sq-seatingOutside, there is tons of seating and often during the summer months there’s always bands out here giving it a great vibe to just come out here and chill out with your buds for an evening.

San-Pedro-Sq-PizzaAfter touring around and trying to decide where to eat, we ended up grabbing a Capricciosa pizza (and altered it a bit) at Pizza Bocca Lupo. Do I love me some pizza man. I’m starting to get picky as to where I eat a pizza. I can’t go just anywhere. It has to be highly rated, nothing with a super thick crust either. I’m enjoying my wood fired thin crust pizzas. I substituted a few things from my order, and added chicken. Holy yum.

Oldest-Building

Oldest-San-Jose-BuildingIf you walk outside, it’s hard not to notice San Jose’s oldest building Peralta Adobe built in 1797! Man, America and their super old history — never ceases to amaze me. It was roped off since it’s not quite accessible to the public anymore. But I hear school kids get tours inside. I love that San Jose built San Pedro Square right around it. Sitting outside with that view

Bray-Butcher-BlockSo perfect to bring a bunch of friends, whether they be from out of town or just going out with a couple of buddies after work. The diverse selection of food is fantastic regardless if you want pizza, sushi, burgers, there’s a ton to choose from.

Market-Beer-CoDowntown San Jose really does have a lot to offer. You don’t always have to venture up to San Francisco to see all the attractions. Down here there’s theatres, operas, concerts, sports attractions (NHL games!) ballets, music lovers, upscale hotels, dining and nightlife destination all in the downtown core. Definitely a hot spot with the locals, fun restaurants, and easy access to the San Jose Sharks games. I’ve had coffee down in the SPQ at Bellano, which I’ve yet to document and snap pictures for you guys. I talked about their second location up in West San Jose, but I’ll have to venture to downtown again to show you the real loft vibe Bellano

San-Pedro-Sq-bloomsSan Jose is currently working on their retailers, as there isn’t too much shopping in the downtown core. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit — come down here for a swallie before the NHL hockey game, or simply for after work dinner with some buddies of yours. Filled with beautiful palm trees, the perfect weather for patio-time with friends.

San Jose is full of amazing history. Apparently we have the worlds largest outdoor monopoly game which is also downtown. I drove past it the other day. Maybe I’ll hop out of my car next time and take some snaps of it. But I’m going to simply ignore the fact it costs a fortune to rent and actually play the game, it’s still pretty cool that it’s even there.

There are so many great places in our new home of San Jose. Keep coming back to my good ol’ blog so I can let you in on all of the fantastic spots I go!

Rose Garden, San Jose

Rose-Garden-headerRoses hold a little special place in my heart. When my Husband and I planned our wedding in 6 days, I had nothing picked out. It was especially fun trying to find a dress after we decided to finally go ahead with a wedding, let alone finding shoes to go with, and of course me not bringing ANY makeup home when I flew back to Newfoundland. Silly me for thinking I needed that break for my skin to breath. Who knew I’d be getting married?

The Guy and I aren’t formal people whatsoever, and planned on getting married in our regular clothes. That was until both our parents piped up saying we should dress up. Okay. Fine.

My Mom asked me what sort of flowers I’d want in my bouquet. “Daisies?” she asked. “Eh, I don’t know. Those smell funny.” I said.

I was never the type of person to have her wedding planned out or thought of at, as a child. I guess you could say I was pretty laid-back about the whole getting married thing. (Ahem. Except for the times I whip out our two small wedding photo albums and reminisce about our memorable, super fun day. The Guy isn’t into looking back at the photos as much as I am ;)

Peach-rosesMy Mom thought some more, “Roses?” she stated. I thought about it and said sure! Our wonderful neighbours helped out with the wedding so much, and picked up a couple of bouquets of red and ivory roses at Costco, and they put together a small bouquet for me to carry as I walked down my parents hallway into our living room.

Yellow-roses-off-to-sideLike I said, roses hold a very special place in my heart now that I am married and have these wonderful memories of them. I had no idea there was a thing such as the Rose Garden in San Jose, so when I went there yesterday, I knew we had to spend more than a few minutes browsing around the grounds.

Roses-at-Rose-GardenBasically I stopped to smell the roses ;)

Enjoy the photos. I’m off to San Francisco for the day to spend a few hours with my Canadian blog buddy, Megan. I’m spending as much time with her as possible before she moves back to Canada next month, so sad!

Rose-Garden-fountain2This rose garden is surrounded by tons of redwood trees, and the aroma of roses just fills the air when walking through. It’s the epitome of relaxation here. Young and old alike were wandering through the gardens, some relaxing on the grass, and many taking it all in, next to the fountain. I have to be honest, California has acclimatized me and I was a little chilly walking around in just my t-shirt and jeans. Canadian friends, I won’t tell you the temperature for fear of being scolded ;)

La Lune Sucrée, San Jose

La-Lune-headerImagine waking up in a quiet secluded apartment with fresh flowers hanging from the balcony, overlooking a cobblestone street. You simply just want to throw on a casual loose linen tee and an old pair of comfy jeans and sandals, walk out your front door to grab some freshly baked french pastries and steaming hot coffee to wake yourself up on a lazy weekend morning.

Not so easy when you don’t live in Europe, right?

Walkway-to-La-LuneI’m happy to say you don’t have to venture too far if you live in the Bay Area and want to recreate that European feeling in San Jose. That’s exactly what we did one morning while we were playing tourist in our new home city.

La-Lune-SucreeI’ve been across the pond a couple of times (once to England and Ireland x2), but nothing in the last ten years. I can get my fix of European bistros by simply visiting La Lune Sucrée, a quaint little restaurant in downtown San Jose. This is definitely a spot where I’ll be taking out-of-town visitors to, and will be popping in here for morning treats and lattes. Yum!  It is a small café, and only has a couple of tables, with more seating outside on the walkway, so keep that in mind if you’re travelling with a larger group of people.

breakfast-at-La-Lune-SucreeToo bad I had to have manners and only order a regular amount of food. I could have easily consumed numerous plates offered at the café.

Pastry-at-La-Lune-SucreeAlthough I do plenty of café and restaurant reviews around the area, I don’t always rave about them and recommend you must try the place. Some of them are average run of the mill restaurants that aren’t all that special, but this place I want you to go visit if you’re ever in the city of San Jose.

Morning-hot-choc-at-La-LuneEspecially if you want a few pastries and a cuppa joe.

hot-choc-and-whip-creamOr in my case a white hot chocolate with whipped cream.

Crepe-at-La-Lune-SucreeThe Guy and I both ordered sweet crepes (as opposed to their liqueur or savoury options which also looked incredible). Their menu is cute and each crepe is labeled by country. I ordered the Italy crepe and my husband went for the Milan. Next time I will definitely add in à la mode which is an added scoop of hand-made gelato. Oh boy. Both crepes were heavenly, but thinking back we should have ordered one sweet and one savoury to split between us. Because two sweet crepes was a bit too much for a morning breakfast, but absolutely fantastic none the less.

I had a chat with both Mark and Bettina, the owners of La Lune Sucrée and enjoyed their story of how they came to open this french pastry café. Bettina learned how to make her pastries and most popular item in the cafe, the Almond Chocolate Croissants in a tiny village in France by a French pastry chef. To make a long story short, Mark and Bettina met in Europe, and fell in love. They relocated back to the Bay Area where he is originally from, and opened this café years later! Now, aren’t I glad I moved from Canada to California, so I can enjoy some of this wonderful piece of Europe that Bettina so carefully creates with her desserts? :)

La-Lune-Sucree-sandwichesI had one of my closest friends come for a visit shortly after finding out about this spot (where my husband and I ate breakfast) so I took my friend for brunch the day we got back from our three day Yosemite climbing trip. We split two sandwiches between each other so we could nibble at both to get a bit of variety. It’s a running joke that I could eat sandwiches for every meal of every day if I had to. It was a good choice to order these, instead of breakfast – even if it was just 10:30 in the morning.

Alright, so I’m pretty picky with my sandwiches and at first I didn’t really want to share since Lori ordered hers on a croissant.

She had the chicken salad sandwich with pecans, apples, raisins, honey dijon and romaine. Mine was the turkey bistro, which had jarlsberg (cheese), dijon, pear pomegranate jam and fresh rosemary. The jam was a great addition to the sandwich, so kudos to Bettina coming up with that creation, and I’ve never heard of jarlsberg cheese before. Apparently it’s similar to swiss. It was really good.

Which one stole the show? Honestly, it’s a tie. There’s no way I can go in there and tell you which one I loved the best. Like I said, picky sandwich-er over here and not all are created equal. But these are excellent, and even on a croissant! I’m a huge lover of a nice crunchy on the outside chewy on the inside ciabatta bun.

Nancy-LoriDo you think we look related? We used to get it a lot when we were younger and both living in Newfoundland, hanging out at our local climbing gym.

I have another best bud coming down in May and I’ve already planned most of her itinerary, and you better believe that I’ll be taking her here, too. Each time I popped into La Lune Sucrée, the staff working there were super friendly and really helpful with indecisiveness to order off the menu. After taking some guidance from them, I ended up with excellent choices from their great selection of pastries. I already can’t wait to go back, luckily they’re a quick drive away!
