Since 2020 hit, I haven’t been doing my makeup on a regular basis. For a good year, everything just sat untouched in my drawer. When I finally went through it, I realized a lot of my old favorites had expired. New purchases made and we’re back in business.
Now that I’m out and about again, driving my 2 eldest to 2 different schools and a toddler who hates his car seat (because I have to unbuckle/rebuckle constantly for the drop offs), I’ve gotten back into a simple makeup routine. Not every day (because let’s be real I do not have the energy for that), but often enough to feel fresh and put-together…I love it when those days happen, ha!
I’ve always loved playing with makeup, but as a mom of three, I’ve really simplified my routine. Here are the makeup essentials I use for an easy, natural look.
My Current Everyday Makeup Favorites
1. La Roche-Posay Moisturizer
I’ve fallen in love with La Roche-Posay moisturizers. They’re lightweight, hydrating, and perfect under makeup. I usually stock up whenever Target has a sale — they never let me down. In cases when that’s not on sale, I use Vanicream facial moisturizer.
2. Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation
People often say Estée Lauder Double Wear is too thick or full coverage, but it’s all in how you apply it. I used to use a damp sponge (from a five-pack I grabbed on Amazon), add one small pump, and blend it in. It evens out my redness and creates a natural, long-lasting finish that doesn’t feel heavy. Lately I have been using zero tools and applying it just using my fingers.
3. NARS Bronzer
A classic for a reason! A dusting of NARS Bronzer in that classic 3 and E shape on the face gives me a faux glow that I love when I haven’t applied my self-tanner that week. It’s like a subtle contour and makes me look like I actually live in California.
4. NYX Eyebrow Pencil
My NYX eyebrow pencil has been my go-to for years. It’s affordable, easy to use, and stays put all day. It frames my face without looking too harsh, which is perfect for a natural everyday look. I opt for the colour espresso!
5. Cream Blush — My Secret to Looking Awake
For years, I was loyal to the ol’ classic NYX Cream Blush, but when I went to repurchase it, I found out it had been discontinued. Break my heart, why don’t ya, NYX! I scoured Sephora in search of a similar texture and finish and found a new favorite — the Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick. I picked up the travel-size version (cause I’m not made of $$$) and I’ve been loving it. The creamy texture blends beautifully, gives a natural flush, and the color lasts all day.
What I Skip in My Routine
These days, I’ve stopped using under-eye concealer and mascara altogether. I even tossed I don’t even use mascara anymore these days. Too much effort to remove it in the evenings when I’m exhausted from parenting.
Keeping It Simple and Real
It feels good to be back into makeup again, even if it’s a pared-down version of what I used to do. My simple everyday makeup routine helps me look refreshed and confident, without taking too much time in the mornings.
As a busy mom who is up at 5:30/6am everyday, I’ve learned that less is more and I’m sticking to my reliable products to make it as quick as possible to get ready.
