How to stay motivated

My co-workers, friends and even people I know online always ask me how I stay motivated. For me, it’s easy. I love being active. But I know everyone doesn’t.

Have you ever tried indoor rock climbing? It’s super fun, and a huge work out in itself. Don’t know what indoor rock climbing is like? Check out the video of me, doing a boulder problem back home in Newfoundland. Please note the video is quite old — it was in 2003 (!!!) so my digital camera wasn’t the best at shooting film back in the day.

It may take a while, but I say you need to find something you absolutely enjoy doing, and keep at it. If you hate running — don’t do it. Simple as that. Get creative, and find an activity that gets your body moving. Just watching those climbing videos just makes my finger tips sweaty, and want to chalk up and get back on the wall.

And another, for good measure ;)

Set small goals. Tell yourself you’ll work out “X” many times this week/this month. Once you achieve that goal, give yourself a treat — a movie date with your bestie or significant other, a new work out top, or maybe just a new mascara you’ve been eyeing. Be your own #MyBetter.

Speaking of mascara. Have you ever tried Make Up For Ever’s Smoky Lash? Look at those lashes it gives me. No, I’m not wearing falsies.

You’ll shortly find out that working out makes you feel good and will definitely boost your own self esteem and confidence. I think it’s easy to keep up something you’re truly passionate about, and have fun doing it, of course it’s hard work but that’s the fun part – creating these new goals to strive for. Or as Nike says…

Working out can improve the quality and even length of your life, just by taking care of your body. It doesn’t have to cost anything, just put the effort and time into it. Everyone goes through tough times, so being there to support and encourage your friends is essential.

As I post on my blog, you know I like to share my own stories, both failures as well as successes. I want you guys to be able to relate to me, to know that you’re not the only one with challenges. I started running again 3 weeks ago, but this time I have a Coach (Hi Steve!). I’ve never been so excited (and still somewhat anxious, but I’m trying to overcome that) to go our for a run once a week. I won’t lie, it’s still very difficult for me, especially with my breathing. but I’m learning to overcome the breathing issues — it’s mostly anxiousness and punch out some longer (such a relative term… 6km is long for me) distances.

I’m leaving everything open in the comments today. I want you to ask me any kind of questions, fitness related or not. Let it be an FAQ sort of thing, for anything you’ve ever wanted to ask me. Use the hash tag #FAQspiffykerms on twitter for your questions, please!

A great quote I found, then prettied up. I pinn’ed this a few months ago (and I guess no one found it interesting enough to re-pin, lol).

Go ahead and leave me a comment. Ask away. FAQ’s will finally be answered!

Merry Christmas… TO YOU

Bet you weren’t expecting another giveaway to be happening this week, did you?

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to do another one until a special little note from Beth came in the mail late last week. Beth is the one who hooked me up with some sweet tickets to that Tennis match in Toronto a few weekends ago.

When I opened the envelope, I truly thought the $100 Sport Chek gift card was for me — then I read the letter hahaha… it said it was for you guys, the readers here of my website. Because Sport Chek and I want you to celebrate the holidays as well, and especially to those who have taken the #MyBetter lead, working towards YOUR better every day.

I’ve decided to host the giveaway right before Christmas so you can still go out and purchase something either for yourself, or for a loved one.

HOW TO WIN the $100 Sport Chek gift card: This will not be a random draw like the one’s last week. I want you to think good and hard about what you’ve accomplished throughout 2012, whether it be fitness related or not. Write it in the comments and I’ll pick someone on Friday morning. Easy. Entries will not be counted after 7am EST Friday, December 7. Giveaway is only open to Canadians.

My accomplishments throughout 2012:

  • I kept up CrossFit (going on almost two years!).
  • I started playing soccer (and running “longer” distances) again.
  • The 50 Day push up challenge is still on-going. Day 34, just 16 more brutal days to go. Oof!
  • I’ve flown home twice this year, to visit my family and especially my nephews. I don’t want them to ever forget who I am (the cool aunt, haha!)
  • I organized (and designed the marketing pieces) a huge event at work by myself (this year, and last) with nearly 200 guests. It was like planning a wedding for a few months! So glad that’s over now. Stress be gone. (photos below!)

I think those are some pretty special accomplishments. :)

Good luck, and Happy Holidays!

What keeps me inspired?

I have a big ol’ sweet tooth that everyone knows about. In order to have a few sweet treat indulgences I need to keep working out! Haha. It’s the honest truth.

Also, working out isn’t just for fitness for me, though that of course plays a huge factor, keeping healthy and active. But it’s a big social part of my life. I’ve established some great 10+ year long relationships with friends that I met through climbing, running groups and now CrossFit.

Here’s Kerry & I, we both attended a wedding in Newfoundland over thanksgiving. Kerry is one of my long-time climbing friends. I don’t know how many years we’ve known each other. But I’m going to go with over 9 years?!

Old photo of Trev & myself at one of his birthdays at the climbing gym no less. My best bud (who I met semi-through climbing, semi-through friends) for 12+ years!

I’ve even taken new friends to the climbing gym with me. Hi Steph, miss you! She’s in Zimbabwe right now and gets back next month.

I always need to remember “You’re only one workout from a good mood”. So true! Working out also keeps me much more alert and I really do have much more energy when I work out throughout the week, than on those weeks where I skip.

It doesn’t hurt that I have a boyfriend that works out (even more!) than I do – so I almost get a sense of regret if I don’t work out as often as I had planned. Seeing him strive, reach his goals through hard work really pushes me to be a better person in life. Stay motivated, and to stay on track.

How do you stay inspired and motivated?

I wrote this blog post to share with you all as I am part of the Sport Chek’s #MyBetter campaign.I hope it inspires some of you to reach your goals. Go get’m tiger! Stay inspired. Stay motivated.
