Meet FitBit

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Fitbit through their partnership with POPSUGAR Select. While I was compensated to write a post about Fitbit, all opinions are my own.

By now you have probably seen me wearing a Fitbit on my arm if you’ve scrolled through my photos on the blog, or follow me on Instagram.Wearing-FitbitFitbit logoI have been wearing the Fitbit Flex for a solid three weeks and have only taken it off twice to charge it when I knew I’d be sedentary, sitting at my computer. It’s even safe to wear in the shower! While it doesn’t stand out on your arm nor is it an eyesore, it’s still a piece of rubber on your arm. You’d be pleased to know one of my favourite designers Tory Burch has teamed up with Fitbit, creating gorgeous metal bracelets and pendant necklaces for sleeker ways to track your fitness.

Lifting-AlfieYou know that I’m not a person who likes to go to a gym and do weights or run on the treadmill. I prefer taking it outside and go rock climbing or do yoga. I’ve recommended a ton of stuff to you guys in the past. I’m always honest and truthful with you, if I got the product for free to review, and I always tell you the pros and cons about a product. While I’m a bit disappointed that it doesn’t track my yoga (since I’m barely moving) nor does it seem to significantly track my bouldering or top roping sessions, it does track me going for runs outside, and taking Alfie for long extend-o walks, think of it as a fancy pedometer basically. You can use the Fitbit as a motivator to get your daily steps in, but please remember in order to get your daily exercise in, you need to get your heart rate up. Walking around a mall for 4+ hours to get your ten thousand steps in shouldn’t count as your cardio for the day. With that being said, I did burn a heck of a lot of calories sweeping our front porch and not many during a yoga class. So keep that part in mind.

On-the-trailsHowever, Fitbit flex can be a great little motivator for those who need the extra push to get moving. When I tap my wrist to see how highly active (or lazy) I’ve been that day, it keeps me accountable for my health and well-being. Because I know darn well I can easily sit at the computer all day long with only grabbing a bite to eat and taking Alfie out every now and then. I don’t want to slowly watch my weight pile on!

I’d like it to fit more snug on my wrists so I swapped out the one that is in the box for the smaller one that came in the starter kit I received. I’m happy to report they kept in mind the people with smaller wrists, a rare treat! If you don’t want to wear the rubber bracelet on your arm, or are worried about it falling off (even though it’s clasped in really well and is almost a bit difficult to remove) you can take the tracking chip off the wristband and put it in a zippered pocket if you’re out on a run. The Fitbit has pre-set a 10,000 step distance for you to keep track of and sync with your computer online.

Fitbit-Sleep-trackerEach morning I check it to see how much sleep I got that night, how restless I was (and let me tell you guys, I’m pretty efficient when it comes to sleep. I can sleep in a room crowded full of people with music blasting and I’ll still get 98%+ sleep efficiency, so I wasn’t surprised at how well I slept.) But I was curious to see how much I tossed and turned, because each movement of the arm during the night reflects “restlessness” according to Fitbit.

Once I’ve been wearing it for 6+ weeks I plan on handing over the Fitbit to my husband. I’d be interested to see how much The Guy and I differ between our sleep and workouts, seeing as he gets terrible rest, and a ton more running and biking in than I would ever think imaginable. Dude goes non-stop.

Overall it gives me a pretty good idea on how my fitness is (or isn’t) during the run of a day. I’m obsessed with the sleep tracker, and especially the silent alarm. If I’m waking up earlier than The Guy I try not to disturb him and the BlackBerry alarms are still pretty loud in the mornings, this one has a silent alarm that vibrates to wake you.

While the $100 price tag won’t break the bank, I am still debating whether or not I’d spend the money on it myself if I didn’t get it to review. Though my Fitbit does motivate me to get up, out and around – I’m not sure it’s suitable to the workout regime I do. I do have to say, since this thing has been on my wrist, it’s definitely kept me accountable for not grabbing a pizza right after my bouldering session (it happens at least twice a month) — and whoopsie totally happened yesterday. With that said, I know my husband is dying to try it out since he runs and bike’s on a daily basis. So I’ll keep you guys in the loop if you wanted to hear more about his thoughts on it.

12 Gift Ideas for Rock Climbers

12-Gift-Ideas-for-Climbers

Has anyone thought about Christmas shopping yet? It’s coming! My favourite time of the year! Thought I’d put together a little wishlist for myself or those who have rock climbing friends and have no idea what to get them for Christmas.Climbers-Gift-Guide

1. Hand Grip Strength donut — Although it may not look like much, it comes in handy especially when it comes to healing finger injuries or wanting to improve your strength. With 3 resistances to choose from, your climber friend will thank you for this small, yet thoughtful gift. I have the 30lb resistance, then do reps of 10 squeezes until failure. Oh the burn!

2. Rock climbing mugs — Who doesn’t want to practice their crimp strength while chugging their morning cuppa joe? You know I had a nickname once: Crimper Queen.

3. Carabiner necklace — LOVE! A mini carabiner that is functional in the way that it locks and opens? Way too cool. Clearly not for climbing. But it’s sweet.

4. Crash Pad — Anyone who heads out to get a bouldering session in, most likely would require a crash pad to cushion a fall. And guess what? After 19 years of climbing and bouldering, I still don’t have one! Many companies make them now besides the bigger brands, and what is neat is that they can now be completely branded and customized to your own style.

5. Figure 8 bracelet — Back in High School this was all I wore on my wrists.

6. Chalk bags — What else are you going to put your chalk in?

7. Climbing tee’s — You know, to keep you warm before you start climbing.

8. Sculptures — Self explanatory, a little artwork on your walls?

9. Climbing Shoes — La Sportiva is a trusted brand of mine. The lace-up (now men’s) miura’s create a snug fit for a narrow foot, especially in the heel cup area. I’ve retired those and bought La Sportiva women’s velcro Katana’s. Not as aggressive, but still can do a mean heel hook and not slip off. Their rubber is impeccable too.

10. Harness — I’m due for a harness upgrade. Thinking keeping with my theme and going for the always reliable Arc’teryx.

11.Chalk — Check out Friction Labs, especially the Unicorn Dust. You don’t have to chalk up as often, take that from me. I’ve been using it since the summer.

12. Mini rope keychain — Adorable, another must have. I’m’ eventually going to buy this for myself.

After workout routine

Products marked with an ‘*’ asterisk were sent for review. Opinions are my own.

Comin’ atcha from the weekend. It’s pretty rare I actually sit down and blog on the weekends so I thought I’d put another post together. Many bloggers talk about their workout routine but what do you guys do after you workout?climbing

Do you like my green Lululemon Wunder Under’s? I bought them back in May. Come to think of it, I should have bought them in black too (they do have a dark charcoal). If only I had known they would be my go-to workout pant for climbing and yoga. I haven’t sweated in them profusely so I can’t be a judge on how well they wick away sweat. I would imagine since they are cotton, it wouldn’t that nice on the skin after a big ol’ run.

You guys know I’m always on the go, whether it be gallivanting out on a hike with my friend, hitting up the climbing gym for a boulder sesh’ or relaxing and doing some kinda painful yin yoga practice which conveniently is available at the climbing gym. I wear make up to the gym. Do I apply directly before I go? No, but I do my make up after I get a shower each morning. I like looking put together and not as though I had 3 hours of sleep (which I have you know, that I get plenty of sleep — but me going sans make up makes me look a little rough for wear). So I thought I’d put together some of my favourite products to use and ways to get comfy when you’re home after a workout.

Grab an Iced Coffee: I don’t pop by every time. However, often I’ll be craving an iced coffee after I go for a climb. By luck, I found this one spot and will often splurge on a three dollar vanilla iced coffee. The people who own the spot are so friendly and always compliment me! They know how to keep a customer, hey? Although they put far too much ice and not enough iced coffee, it’s one of the best places I’ve found.

Take Alfie for a Walk: As soon as I get home I know my little buddy has to go out for a piddle. Once I walk in the door I grab his harness and off we go.

Put my hair up: You know how some people need to remove their bras the second they walk in the door? I’m not one of those at all (since… y’know: I.B.T.C and all), I’m one of the people who need to put her hair up as she steps in the door. Anyone else? I grab a hair tie and put that hair in a messy topknot. I get all that hair out of my face and secured with a lululemon headband.

Have a snack: Whether it be a handful of nuts, some plantain chips or an apple — something needs to go in my belly as soon as I get home otherwise… hangry.

Add the layers: I’ll almost always put on my grey H&M hoody once I get in the house.

Blast the music: We don’t have a cable TV here at the house, so instead I opt for some tunes on an internet radio station and blast the music. It’s either a Songza play list, or Audio Box Live (from Montreal, Canada!).

Take my makeup off: These Neutrogena Cleansing Towelettes* wipes are reserved for right after a workout when I’m super sweaty and need to cleanse my face immediately after coming home. I received these to try and I remembered why I wasn’t the hugest fan — while they’re great on the face, they sting my eyes. Up & Up are my usual go-to wipes which is much better on my wallet. I can continue using the Neutrogena one’s, I just can’t use them around my eye area. They both remove all the make up and don’t leave any slick residue on my face. The worst. Lazy girls tip — keep make up wipes on the night stand because some days you’re too tired to do the nightly make up removing regime. If I’m cleansing my face and not using wipes, purity by philosophy has been my number one cleanser to break down any make up I have on. This is safe enough to use around the eyes and doesn’t leave my skin feeling sucked dry of moisture. That my friends, is why I have been using it since 2011.

Wash the body: If I feel like taking a shower after a climb or yoga sesh, which let’s be honest — isn’t always. I hop in and lather up my loofa with the philosophy body wash. Currently I’m using Love Sweet Love, it smells super girly, I love it. Never once have I used this for anything but body wash (you can use it as shampoo or pour some into a bath), I have a couple of these philosophy bottles stacked in my bathroom ready to use.  If I want something  more citrus-y, I use the Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash in Pink Grapefruit*. The tiny beads in the body wash is supposed to fight acne. While I don’t have any and I think this is probably geared more towards teens than someone in their thirties, I’d absolutely buy this again, especially now that I’m on a stricter budget and can’t afford the $30 philosophy body washes every time. Isn’t it funny I love a good pink grapefruit scent but feel ill if I taste the real thing? It doesn’t make sense. Why you so bitter, grapefruit? You smell and look so tasty.

Alright, that’s it. My after workout routine from grabbing an iced coffee or some food, putting my hair up and either removing all my make up or hopping in the shower.

What time of day do you workout?
