What did I do wrong?

I was in the mood to cook a feast last night and I ended up making chicken pot pie (recipe grabbed from a Campbells cook book that I’ll actually post up soon) and apple crisp for dessert.

I have no idea what I did wrong when I was following Kristin’s recipe. Her’s looks so … crispy.

Where as mine ended up being very wet. I’m not giving up just yet as it’s one of the better apple crisps I have tasted in ages. I just wish it would’ve been crispier. I thought it was because we have an older style oven in the apartment, so I cooked it 10 minutes longer than the recipe called for. It still looked wet — I ended up cooking the darn thing twice as long (a whole hour). Which resulted in soggy apples. But whatever, it’s good in my mouth.

Notice the nice burn crusty marks and soggy oats.

Anyone know why it wasn’t as crispy though? Help appreciated!

  1. Here’s my recipe, Nancy!

7-8 medium sized apples (of your choice), cut into chunks
    1 cup brown sugar
    1 cup flour
1 cup margarine or butter (I soften mine in the microwave a bit to make it easier to stir)
    3/4-1 cup of oats

Cut up apples into chunks. (I put mine in a bowl of salted water so they don’t go brown as I’m preparing everything) In a large bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour, margarine and oats. Line the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan with apple chunks. Spread brown sugar/flour/margarine/oat mixture over top of apples. Bake at 350F for 30-35 minutes, or until apples are tender when poked with a fork. Voila!

  2. Oh no, I’m sorry it didn’t turn out! What kind of apples did you use?

Nancy says: Oh, it still tasted amazing Kristin! I’m determined to make it crispy… but I followed your recipe to a tee. I used 3 “normal” sized Granny Smith. My dish I think was 9×13. Was it because my dish was possibly bigger than yours?

  3. Now I want to make both of those things for dinner tonight!! I am actually making The Pioneer Woman’s meatloaf but I might make the apple crisp too. I’ve never actually baked anything that doesn’t come straight from a box..
